Prince Stiva Oblonsky: Likable Lady's Man, or Conceited Pollyanna?

Ladies love him, his friends envy him, his servants fawn over him, and his governesses, well, let's just say they can't resist him...but, what about you? Do you find Stiva an amiable representative of a quaint aristocracy, or do you resent the hypocriticalness/irony of a liberal Russian prince in the 1870s?

    I think that Stiva might be someone who would turn against you and you would never notice because you liked him so much

    Hmm...he reminds me a bit of a child. Despite everything he's done, he strikes me as just an innocent kid inside. I found him sort of funny, I mean he loves his kids and his wife, and I guess life in general. Yet, he committed adultery, and even though that's a horrible thing to do, with Stiva, it seems like an innocent mistake a child would make, like taking too many cookies before dinner. I think I would find him rather easy to forgive, because he's so likeable.

    I really can't stand Stiva, but the "too many cookies before dinner" is a perfect description of him. Even the way he acts to his wife is like a kid would...as if he can't understand her emotions.
    Glad to have such a perceptive blogger join...Welcome!
    I'll be posting more in a day or two, BTW. I just moved, so I haven't been keeping up on my reading.
